2025-2026 SPARK Fellowship

The Creative Writing Program in the Department of English is pleased to announce its annual SPARK Fellowship competition. This is an opportunity for undergraduate study abroad combining Creative Writing with cultural translation.

The SPARK Fellowship will provide financial support of up to $4,000 for a student’s independent summer study abroad, involving the pursuit of a project that will combine creative writing and cultural translation. The term cultural translation encompasses a wide variety of possible projects, including the literary translation of texts into English or the reflection of intercultural experiences through language or art. Previous projects have included the creation of a blog that was updated daily with observations, photographs, and short videos; and a short documentary film featuring interviews with relevant scholars and artists.

Students are encouraged to propose original projects they have developed in discussion with a faculty mentor whom they’ve identified to oversee the project through its completion. Faculty mentors will be asked to formally endorse the proposed project.

Eligible applicants will have completed ENGL 3800W: “Introduction to Creative Writing.” This course requirement must be met by the time a student embarks on the summer fellowship. (An applicant should indicate in the e-mail conveying their application materials if plans are in place to complete the required course during the spring semester prior to a summer fellowship.)

Applicants should demonstrate a desire for active exploration and serious reflection on cultural difference. Students will be asked to give a presentation on their project during the semester following their return.

While the SPARK recipient is not required to undertake the project in summer, the fellow will need to complete all work—including its final presentation on campus—prior to graduation.

Designed to encourage autonomous research, this fellowship is distinct from other Study Abroad programs offered by UGA.
