New Faculty Profile: Josh Hussey

By Summer Porter

Head short of Joshua HesseyDr. Joshua Hussey is a Lecturer in the UGA English Department, with primary teaching responsibilities in First-Year Writing. He earned his undergraduate degree from UCLA in English before embarking on a variety of short-term jobs while taking time to travel. He later came to UGA to pursue an MA in Creative Writing, completing a PhD in English in 2014. He was awarded a Brittain Postdoctoral appointment to GA Tech in the School of Literature, Media, and Communication before coming to UGA. Regarding these experiences, he says, “I tend to find a lot of richness in all kinds of experience, in the everyday as well as what appears to be the sublime, so sinking into whatever appears tends to move me.”

In coming to UGA, Dr. Hussey expresses an appreciation of the support of faculty members, care for students, and collective commitment to education within the English Department. Concerning what he wants to bring to UGA, he comments, “I hope to bring reliability and resourcefulness to the program; to students, I hope to share my interests in learning, problem-solving, and creativity,” especially concerning the intersection of gaming and literature.

This or that

Outside of UGA, Dr. Hussey volunteers with the Athens Community Council on Aging as a yoga instructor and is an active member of various Buddhist organizations across the globe. He also adores adventuring with his children and dabbles in carpentry, auto mechanics, and videogames.

Dr. Hussey says he prefers to be addressed as Star-Lord, though Dr. Trash-Panda will also do. His office hours vary semester-to-semester, so sending him a note to schedule a meeting is best.
