Upcoming Skills Studios: Fall 2026

ENGL6001: Editing Skills

CRN 66917

Wednesdays 1:15-2:10

with Mounawar Abbouchi

A great writer can often be their own worst reader. This Skills Studio offers a brush up on foundational grammar and mechanics for editing your own writing at the graduate level. Writers will come in with a complete draft of their writing (seminar paper, conference paper, dissertation chapter, etc.) to workshop over the course of the semester.

ENGL1500: Data Visualization

CRN 65781

Wednesdays 1:15-2:10

with Camilla Nivison

In this course, we will explore visual representations of data. Students will discuss the merits of different types of data visuals and learn to create their own. This course is suitable for both STEM and non-STEM students.

ENGL 1500: Grammar and Style by Diagram

CRN 65780

Thursdays 11:35-12:30

with Elisha Schuett

Learning the conventions of English grammar can "unlock" the language for writers, empowering them to make intentional choices concerning style and meaning. In this course, students will learn English grammar through sentence diagramming. They will also learn how to use diagramming as an editing tool to help "fix" "awkward" sentences and develop their own writing style.

ENGL 1500: Basics in Writing for Career Success

CRN 65783

Thursdays 4:45-5:30

with Jessica McLeod-Waddell

This course will focus on professional writing in the workplace (i.e. email writing, Slack messaging, project proposals, resumes, cover letters, etc.). Writing tasks in this course will be customizable to serve students in all disciplines.
