Visiting Author Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi

The English Department is thrilled to welcome Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi for a night of reading and audience interaction at the University of Georgia. The event will begin at 5pm and be hosted in the Miller Learning Center, Room 0248. This event is free and open to the public. 

Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi is the author of Kintu, Let's Tell This Story Properly, and The Girl is a Body of Water. She is a recipient of the Windham-Campbell Literature Prize 2018, awarded annually by Yale University. She won the Global Commonwealth Short story prize 2014 for her short story, "Let’s Tell This Story Properly". She is a Cheuse International Writing Fellow (2019) and KNAW-NAIS residency (2021). She has a Ph.D. from Lancaster University and has been (senior) lecturer at several universities in Britain.  Hailed by The Economist as "an international superstar", her first novel Kintu is praised by Salman Rushdie as "‘a Ugandan One Hundred Years of Solitude" on the pages of The New York Times.

The Girl Is A Body of Water (Tin House, 2020) was short-listed for prizes such as The Diversity Book Awards, Encore Prize 2021, James Tait Black Prize 2021, Aspen Words Literary Prize 2021. It was also selected as Best Book of the Autumn by The Guardian, Telegraph Magazine, Times, Independent, Stylist and Irish Times; it was named the best Book of the Month by Waterstones and Apple Books. Also called "The Best Book of the Year" by TIME; The Washington Post; O, the Oprah Magazine. Tayari Jones (author of An American Marriage) says, "Makumbi is such an honest, truthful writer. . . . I loved every single page.”
