Creative Writing New Student Reading

The Creative Writing Program is delighted to present our first event of the 2023 – 24 academic year, The New Student Reading! 

We will celebrate the work of three Ph.D. students: O-Jeemiah Agbaakin, Colin Bishoff, and Erik B. Brown. This event is free and open for the public.  

About the Readers:  

O-Jeremiah Agbaakin is the author of The Sign of the Ram (APBF/Akashic Books, 2023), selected by Kwame Dawes and Chris Abani for the New Generation African Poets Chapbook Series. His poems are recently published/forthcoming in Beloit Poetry Journal, Cincinnati Review, Guernica, Kenyon Review, Pleiades, POETRY, Poet Lore, Poetry Daily, and elsewhere. He is a Tin House scholar and has placed second for the Grist Journal ProForma Contest; finalist of Chad Walsh Chapbook Series, Black Warrior Review contest and the Sillerman First Book Prize for African Poets. 

Colin Bishoff is a PhD student in Creative Writing at the University of Georgia. He holds a BA in English/Creative Writing from the University of Georgia and an MFA in fiction from Georgia College and State University. Between his undergraduate and graduate years, he spent four years teaching English at public schools in South Korea for the Jeollanamdo Language Program. A native of Winder, Georgia, he draws upon his memories of growing up in the South and explores the intersection of religion, redemption, regret, and the idiosyncrasies that make the world…human.  

Erik B. Brown (he/they) is a queer poet and PhD student living in Athens, GA. Erik holds an MFA in poetry from the University of Houston and served as the digital editor for Gulf Coast: A Journal of Literature & Fine Arts.
