UGA Creative Writing Program Ph.D. candidate Christina Wood has received a Writer of Note grant from the deGroot Foundation in support of her novel-in-progress, Escapes. Set in the mid-coastal town of Cambria, California, Escapes follows four female characters on the brink of enormous life change as symptoms of climate change begin to manifest in their town.

The deGroot Foundation is a private family foundation created in 2010 to support high impact, sustainable innovation, education and cultural projects. Through selective annual literary grants and fellowships, the Foundation discovers new voices and encourages emerging writers to complete in-progress books.

Christina Wood is a fiction writer with short stories appearing in The Paris Review, Granta, McSweeney’s, Virginia Quarterly Review, and other journals. Her story “The Astronaut” won the 2018 Shirley Jackson Award for short fiction and received a “Distinguished Stories” mention in the 2019 Best American Short Stories anthology. She is a PhD candidate in English and Creative Writing at the University of Georgia, where she teaches creative writing and composition.
