EARTH 16-18: Ecocriticism and Race Theory, 16th-18th centuries

Dr. Emmanuelle Peraldo, Professor of British Literature and History of 18th-Century Ideas, has worked extensively on Defoe and Swift. She is also interested in travel literature. Her approach is transdisciplinary and she is particularly interested in the fields of ecocriticism, geocriticism and animal studies. Dr Nora Galland, Associate Professor, researches Premodern Critical Race Studies (PCRS) with a focus on early modern English drama, the dialectics of identity and otherness, slurs, words of abuse and verbal violence, as well as adaptations and appropriations of Shakespeare's plays. Profs. Galland and Peraldo introduce us to their multi-campus, multi-year research project EARTH 16-18. The project is situated at the intersection of critical race theory, which is based on the study of how bodies are defined by power relations, and ecocriticism, which focuses on the relationship between environment, nature, animals and humans.
